Researching Bridges | Our First Research Endeavor

Something they don’t teach in design school is how to talk to clients (or bosses) in a language they will understand. You learn of primary, secondary, and complimentary colors; what makes a design “successful”; and many other valuable things. But what they don’t teach you–what you have to have the passion to learn on your own–is how what you do fits into the business world. I quickly discovered what part design should play in business, but my vision isn’t reflected in standard business practices. This gave me the motivation to write The Value of Design and begin educating businesses and potential clients about what the true purpose of design is.

Before beginning to edit the booklet for it’s next version, I have decided to conduct interviews with those left-brained, non-creative business people to gain insight into exactly what their point of view is. The first interview I conducted was with a brilliant entrepreneurial mind that I have quickly grown to respect and admire over the last few months that I have known him. Mike Tollar of Pre-Paid Legal has a background in engineering, which gives him a very different perspective on design than most others. However, his insight proved to be very valuable to this project.

Researching Bridges

Point Brake is soon to embark upon it’s newest endeavor: a research project consisting of interviews with left-brained non-creatives. This project will hopefully shed some light on exactly where the gap lies and how designers can build bridges to better reach those not-a-single-creative-bone-in-their-body folks. The information gathered from this project will, among other things, help to further develop our The Value of Design booklet. Some interviews will be featured as articles in our blog as well.

Participating in this project might benefit you or someone that you know. Are you a left-brained, not-a-single-creative-bone-in-your-body business owner? Do you know someone that is? Contact us today to see how you can help to build a stronger business community.
