Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 years, there’s no doubt you’ve heard the huge buzz about social media networking. But, why is the buzz constantly growing louder? Why is Pepsi skipping out on advertising in the Super Bowl just for a $20 million social media campaign? Why are Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social media networks so important to business?
The Answer Lies in Branding
As I’ve said previously, individuals purchase products based on their gut (which is what creates a brand). People base new purchasing decisions on the reputation of the brand, or, based on the opinions of others. If someone sees on Twitter that Company X was rated poorly in customer service, this could damage that company’s brand and keep a potential customer from buying into them. If Company Y has 500,000 followers or fans, this will translate in the mind of the consumer that this brand has a solid tribe behind it. That will make some want to become part of that tribe.
You Pat My Back, I’ll Pat Yours
People want to feel important. They don’t want to feel like a number grouped in with 500,000 others, so an important part of social media is to reciprocate. If someone follows you on Twitter, and you find the content in their tweets (posts) interesting, useful, or at the very least entertaining, follow them! Not only that, but respond to what they say. It will show them that they are being heard, that their opinions matter, and that you actually care about them. The companies that listen to the opinions of their consumers will be the most prosperous. Not to mention that social media opens up the door to a free R&D department completely at your disposal.
Jump On!
The hype will only continue to grow. Take advantage of the free resources you have to connect with your customers and start showing them that you actually care.
